Kamala Emanuel, Socialist Alliance candidate for Denison

17 November 1993

Kamala has been a socialist activist for 10 years. She was involved in the campaigns for a free East Timor, for decriminalisation of abortion, for the protection of old-growth forests and against nuclear testing in the Pacific. She has helped organise demonstrations against racism and in support of refugees.

Emanuel moved from Newcastle to Hobart in 1998 to be an organiser for the socialist youth organisation Resistance. In 2002-03 she pioneered a Socialist Alliance branch in Launceston. In that time, she played a leading role in the campaign against the war on Iraq, initiating and helping to organise some of the biggest demonstrations Launceston has seen in years. Since returning to Hobart, she has continued her involvement in the anti-war movement through the Hobart Peace Coalition.

Emanuel was the Socialist Alliance candidate in the May 1 Tasmanian upper house election for the seat of Elwick, receiving 5.2% of the vote. She is a medical practitioner with a keen interest in reproductive rights.

Emanuel is a working-class candidate who stands for the interests of women, workers, students and pensioners.
