Bougainville liberators tour Australia

SYDNEY — Bougainville Women for Peace and Freedom (BWPF) representative Josephine Takunani Sirivi, and former Bougainville Revolutionary Army commander Sam Kauona addressed a gathering and film screening in Sydney on March 18.

They are currently touring Australia to launch the book As Mothers of the Land, which contains various essays about the birth of the BWPF.

The book will be launched on March 24 at the National Library in Canberra, then in Melbourne and Sydney.

New Farm residents oppose convention centre

BRISBANE — An angry crowd of 350 New Farm residents met on March 20 to oppose the development of a 510-seat restaurant and convention centre in New Farm Park. The park's previous kiosk and restaurant burned down four years ago.

The proposed convention centre, which would be jointly operated by the Brisbane City Council (BCC) and developer Glen Boyle, would be open from 7am until 1 am seven days a week.

“There are about 50 restaurants in this area — we don't need another large-scale concrete and glass monstrosity”, said Coral Wynter, the Socialist Alliance candidate for Central Ward in the March 27 BCC elections.
