Anti-Bush protests make a splash internationally

5 November 2003

BY JAMES VASSILOPOULOS

CANBERRA — US President George Bush's one-day visit to Canberra and the protests against him received widespread coverage in the international news media.

The October 23 protest in Canberra was covered by the three main international newswires — Associated Press, Reuters and Agence France Presse. The AFP reported that ``5000 protestors thronged outside the parliament''. The Associated Press reported that Bush was ``heckled inside and outside parliament''.

In the United States, CBS News reported that ``thousands of protesters marched to the US Embassy and a few scuffled with police as they tried to break through security barriers. The protesters then marched to Howard's official residence, where the prime minister was hosting a barbecue for his American counterpart.''
