Subiaco mayor welcomes Socialist Alliance

1 October 2003

BY FRED FUENTES

PERTH — More than 40 people on September 19 attended a Subiaco screening of Michael Moore's Roger and Me. The event was organised by the Socialist Alliance. Alliance members hope to form an alliance branch in the area in the future.

Opening the evening, Subiaco mayor Tony Costa said it was a pleasure to speak at an event organised by the Socialist Alliance as it was “the only party in Subiaco to organise against the war in the Middle East”.

Socialist Alliance members in the area initiated the Subiaco Residents Against the War group, which organised a 60-strong anti-war march through the suburb earlier this year. Alex Whisson, a member of the Socialist Alliance, also moved an anti-war motion at a Subiaco Council meeting. While the motion was supported by Costa, it was lost by one vote.

Costa, a former ALP member, added that he was happy to see that the Socialist Alliance was offering an alternative to the mainstream politics of Labor and Liberal, which are “indistinguishable” these days.
