PHILIPPINES: Left wins seats in Congress

23 July 2003

BY REIHANA MOHIDEEN

MANILA — On July 10, the progressive democratic alliance Sanlakas and the Workers Party (Partido ng Manggagawa) were at long last proclaimed as having won seats in Congress along with five other organisations.

The announcement ended two years of court deliberations on a temporary restraining order that prevented the electoral commission from proclaiming winners elected under the party-list law.

Renato Magtubo, a returning Congress representative formerly from Sanlakas, will take the seat for Partido ng Manggagawa. Jose Virgilio Bautista will be the Sanlakas representative.
