Green Left Weekly readership grows

25 June 2003

BY JOHN PERCY

Green Left Weekly continues to climb up the web rankings, confirming it as the most visited political web site in Australia.

Last week GLW's Alexa (<http://www.alexa.com.au>) ranking rose to 57,727, while the next most visited Australian politcal web site — the NSW Labor Council's (<http://www.labor.net.au>) — was 101,009. GLW's steady progress this year can be seen in the accompanying chart from Alexa.

It is encouraging that our visitors haven't necessarily fallen off since the end of Washington's war on Iraq, as has been the tendency for quite a few of the popular alternative media sites internationally.

Many months after the event, our attention was drawn to a staff article on the ZDNet computer news web site (<http://www.zdnet.com.au>), which confirmed again that in the middle of the war, Green Left Weekly was the most visited political web site in Australia.

“Australians looking for political Web sites in the lead-up to the war on Iraq headed overseas, with a British and a United States site filling the top two positions on the `most-visited' ladder”, the March 21 ZDNet article reported. These were, respectively, the web sites of the British Guardian newspaper and left-wing US satirist Michael Moore. However, ZDNet reported that the “top Australian site in the political category was Green Left, which rose from sixth to third position”.

This is great news. Our goal is to spread the alternative message as widely as possible.
