Support grows for Socialist Alliance

16 April 2003

BY KERRYN WILLIAMS

CANBERRA — The Socialist Alliance in the ACT has doubled its financial membership over the past month, a result of intense involvement in the anti-war movement. The alliance has also collected thousands of signatures on a petition calling on Senate opposition parties to block the military provisions of the federal budget.

The Socialist Alliance screened the anti-war film, Not in My Name, on March 26, which attracted more than 50 people, and sponsored a public forum on March 31 featuring Marxist historian Humphrey McQueen, which was attended by 60 people.

Socialist Alliance activist James Vassilopoulos, who is also convener of the ACT Network Opposing War, told Green Left Weekly that “there has been increased interest in finding alternatives to the system that creates these wars”.

The next Socialist Alliance event in Canberra will be an anti-war film night featuring John Pilger's March 28 speech in Sydney. See page 27 for details.
