2000 rally in Perth

26 March 2003

BY NIKKI ULASOWSKI

PERTH — On March 19, 2000 people attended an emergency anti-war protest called on four hours notice.

Anti-war sympathisers employed by the Perth City Council organised access to electrical power for the protest, and a PA-supply company supplied a PA system free of charge.

On the University of western Australia, some 20 anti-war activists worked flat out for four hours before the rally distributing leaflets. Comrades on campus also did an absolutely fantastic job. They did continuous “lecture bashing”, receiving applause from students, delivering overhead projections to lecturers advertising the details of the emergency protest, chalking-up footpaths throughout campus, and organising a speakout at 3pm. As a result of this work, a high proportion of those attending the anti-war rally were UWA students.

Greens MPs walked out of the state parliament to attend the protest.
