Last weekend one million people marched against Australia joining the US
war against the Iraqi people. An unprecedented movement has taken over
the stage of Australian politics.
If it can keep its resolve and maintain its momentum, this movement
will force a change of policy or a crisis of government. We have an opportunity
to be much more than a pressure group. We are a movement that can help
stop the war on Iraq.
The anti-war movement needs to consolidate what we achieved last weekend.
This means building the activist base of the movement. The movement needs
thousands of informed activists — who can actively inform and organise
their friends, workmates and local communities.
Green Left Weekly has been doing this job in every major population
centre of Australia, and now increasingly throughout rural Australia. In
the days leading up to last weekend's protests, GLW distributors
organised hundreds of community stalls in every corner of Australia, with
15,000 copies of GLW being distributed (tens of thousands also viewed
it on the web).
Many subscribers, who previously received only their own copy of GLW,
decided to take bundles and distribute copies of the paper to others in
their suburbs or towns. Hundreds of copies of GLW were distributed
in regional centres like Mackay, St Helens, Davenport, Byron Bay, Cairns,
Toowoomba and other regional towns throughout Australia.
Every subscriber and supporter of GLW can become a writer and
distributor — an activist for the anti-war movement.
