Students plan strike for March 5

12 February 2003
BY GRANT COLEMAN & EMMA CLANCY

WOLLONGONG — Following the February 8 anti-war protest in Wollongong, 25 students from high schools and universities held a meeting to plan action for the international student strike on March 5. The strike is calling for “Books not bombs” and “No War on Iraq”.

Inspired by the unexpectedly huge turn out to the protest they had just attended, the students discussed how to make the strike the next big anti-war action in Wollongong. They decided to take the proposal to every high school and campus in the Illawarra.

Michael Szafraniec, president of the Student's Representative Council at the University of Wollongong, promised that the SRC would organise buses to pick up high school students who walk out of school for the strike. He has also promised that every new student at Wollongong University will receive a leaflet for the strike in their orientation “show bags”. Local bands Nabilone and Flying Colours have both agreed to play at the student protest.
