PALESTINE: Israel murders UN worker

4 December 2002

BY ROHAN PEARCE

A United Nations investigation into the killing of British UN worker Iain John Hook in Jenin on November 22 has begun. An investigator from the UN arrived in Jerusalem on November 24.

The Israeli army maintains that it “responded” to gunfire from Palestinians inside the UN compound in the refugee camp. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) which maintains the facility, described the Israeli account as “incredibly incorrect”.

A spokesperson for UNRWA told the November 24 New York Times that “We know that we had control of it, there were no militants inside it, and there was absolutely no firing coming from inside it”.
