BRISBANE — A video and discussion night on the continuing US/UN war
against Iraq was held in the Paddington Workers Club on November 7. It
featured a talk by researcher Pauline Rigby on the horrific results of
US/UN sanctions on the Iraqi people over the last 10 years.
Rigby explained that before the imposition of sanctions in 1991, Iraq
had been a relatively developed Third World country, with free education,
high health standards and female illiteracy that had been reduced from
88% to 9%. Since the 1990-91 Gulf War and the imposition of sanctions,
the country's living standards have plummeted.
Rigby denounced the effects of poisonous depleted uranium shells used
by the US army in the 1991 Gulf War. She noted that many ex-US and British
servicepeople, who were also badly affected by the radiation emitted by
depleted uranium, had visited and supported the Iraqi people.
