Latin America's struggle for justice discussed

23 October 2002

BY ROBERTO JORQUERA

SYDNEY — The 35th anniversary of the death of Ernesto Che Guevara was marked with a seminar, entitled “Latin America's struggle for justice”. More than 100 people participated.

The gathering was initiated by Committees in Solidarity with Latin America and the Caribbean (CISLAC) and supported by the Colombian Solidarity Committee, the Australia-Cuba Friendship Society, Amigos de Cuba, the Chilean Indigenous Popular Network and Adepu Chile.

Presentations were delivered on the impact of neo-liberalism on Latin American countries and Cuba's resistance to US imperialism. Workshops discussed developments in Colombia, Argentina and Brazil, as well as the continued relevance of the revolutionary ideas of Che Guevara.

Participants resolved to build a Latin American solidarity contingent for the protest against the World Trade Organisation trade ministers' meeting on November 14. Around $1200 was raised for Madres de la Plaza de Mayo in Argentina.
