BRAZIL: Referendum rejects FTAA

25 September 2002
BY IGGY KIM

Of the 10,149,542 Brazilians who participated in a week-long unofficial referendum on the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), 9,979,964 (98.33%) voted against Brazil joining the US-dominated economic bloc.

The results were released on September 17 at a press conference in the Nereu Ramos Auditorium of the Chamber of Deputies, in Brasilia, with the presence of representatives of the National Commission on the Plebiscite, including members of the Landless Workers Movement (MST), the main union federation (CUT) and the Brazilian National Council of Christian Churches (CONIC).

In response to a second question — whether Brazil should continue to participate in the FTAA negotiations — 95.94% voted against.
