Meeting supports `Cuba Five'

18 September 2002
BY LYNDA HANSEN

BRISBANE — Thirty people attended a public meeting on September 12 to mark the fourth year since five Cubans were arrested in Miami and convicted in June 2001 for espionage. They had been involved in monitoring right-wing anti-Cuba terrorist groups in Miami.

The meeting began with entertainment from the Salvadorean Dance Group and a sizzling performance from Latin dance duo Night Moves. Rafael Pacheco and Julie Webb-Pullman from the Brisbane Cuba Five Committee presented an update on the international campaign to free the five men.

The five men are detained in separate jails in the US. They have received thousands of letters of support from 42 defence committees across the world.

During the meeting, large red keys were signed by the audience to send to the Cuba Five. The audience passed a motion demanding their immediate release and calling on the US to cease harbouring anti-Cuba terrorist groups.

The next Brisbane Free the Five Committee meeting will be held at 6pm on September 25 in the Resistance Centre at 122 Barry Pde, Fortitude Valley. For more information phone (07) 3899 2076 or 0427 627 936.
