Progressives do well in NTEU election

21 August 2002

BY JEREMY SMITH

BALLARAT — Progressives have done well in the July 10-22 National Tertiary Education Industry Union (NTEU) elections. In the poll for national office bearers, the incumbents were returned.

Carolyn Allport was returned as national president with 84% of the vote, while Grahame McCulloch and Ted Murphy each received 79% for general secretary and national assistant secretary respectively. The rival “Democracy and Action” team, which recieved most of the remaining vote, did better than many expected.

In the Victorian division, the “For a Renewed and Active NTEU” ticket's Matt McGowen and Glenis Davey won secretary and assistant secretary positions.

McGowen told Green Left Weekly that he would like the division to encourage grassroots involvement in the union through the development of delegates' networks and structures, and a greater emphasis on the role of union activists in branches.
