Following
successful campaigns to gain electoral registration at the federal level,
and in NSW and Tasmania, the Socialist Alliance is now campaigning for
electoral registration in Victoria.
“To register in Victoria, the Socialist Alliance must have at least
500 members enrolled to vote in the state”, Jackie Lynch told Green
Left Weekly. Lynch is the Socialist Alliance's candidate for Northcote.
Beginning the year with around 350 members in Victoria, interest in
the Socialist Alliance has grown with the federal government's attacks
on refugees and militant trade unions. At the end of July, membership was
approaching 500.
“Our central campaigns are the defence of AMWU Victorian secretary Craig
Johnston, the overturning of the federal government's racist treatment
of refugees and the repeal of the so-called `anti-terrorist' legislation”,
Lynch said.
The Socialist Alliance aims to have at least 700 members on the electoral
roll before it makes its submission for registration at the end of August.
“The state government may call an election as early as November. In
order to guarantee registration as a party, and therefore have our name
on the ballot paper, we have decided to go all-out to join as many supporters
to the alliance as possible”, Lynch said.
