Anti-war message comes to UCan

CANBERRA — The anti-war movement came to the University of Canberra on October 19, when activists held a speakout and petition stall, with props highlighting the truth about George Bush's ``war on terrorism''.

The action coincided with a visit to the campus by Labor Senator Kate Lundy.

Labor's stance on the war attracted much criticism, with Resistance activist James Caulfield telling students, ``The ALP has shown no reservations ... in fact they proudly declare being ``at one'' with the Liberals''.

Anti-nuclear action

BRISBANE — Fifty people joined a rally outside the Queensland State Executive Building on October 5 to protest Premier Peter Beattie's approval for a nuclear irradiation plant at Narangba, north of Brisbane.

Rally organisers, Everyone for a Nuclear-free Future and the Stop Food Irradiation Alliance, believe that the federal and state governments' support for the proposal is another step in promoting the expansion of nuclear power as the ``clean, green, energy source'' in Australia.

Environmentalists and local residents are opposed to the plant, with Frank Jell from the East Narangba Community Action Group warning that community protests would continue despite the decision.
