Resistance in action

29 August 2001

subh = New Resistance branch launched

@box text intr = MELBOURNE — Resistance's new Melbourne north-east branch was launched in Northcote's Caf‚ 303 on August 18. Seventy people celebrated the new branch, listening to music from Jupiter Sound, Heidi and well-known women's band Akasa. The afternoon raised $400, to be put towards Resistance's anti-corporate campaigns.

According to Resistance activist Jacquie Moon, “the launch was a huge success. The funds will be particularly useful in the next few months, helping us to run campaigns in support of refugee rights, to support the S11 II high school walkout, and the O3 blockade of the Commonwealth Business Forum. Our success tonight hopefully signals the beginning of a large expansion of Resistance's campaigns in the north-east area”.

Band night supports internationalism

@box text intr = ADELAIDE — Under the slogan “Rock against repression” Resistance activists and supporters rocked the night away on August 18 in support of the people's struggle in Indonesia, Aceh and Papua New Guinea. Featuring the bands Bomb Scare, RNM and Requiem, the night raised much-needed funds for Green Left Weekly. Several attendees joined the Socialist Alliance on the night. Resistance intends to hold another band night on September 22.

subh = Supre protest intimidated

@box text intr = ADELAIDE — Resistance held a demonstration on August 24 to protest clothing retailer Supre's use of sweatshop labour. Protesters demanded that the clothing retailer Supre sign the Home Worker's Code of Practice. The code insures that workers will be paid minimum wage.

@box text intr = Despite much positive attention from shoppers, the city council and police attempted to move the protest on. Withstanding intimidation and a threat to confiscate the stall, Resistance members stayed in order to get their message across.

Resistance will be holding the actions every Friday, 3-5pm outside the Supre store in Rundle Mall.
