25 April 2001

BY PIP HINMAN

@box text intr = Activists from around 20 countries will be gathering in Jakarta between June 7 and 10 to discuss regional responses to the neo-liberal offensive hitting the people of Asia.

Apart from Indonesia, Aceh and East Timor, participants will also include activists from the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, United States, the Netherlands and France. There will also be activists coming from Latin America, including from Ecuador and Cuba.

The conference is being organised by INCREASE, the Indonesian Centre for Research and Self-Empowerment, whose affiliates include the Indonesian National Front for Workers' Struggle, National Student League for Democracy, the National Peasant Union and other mass organisations. Other Indonesian activist groups will also be participating in the conference.

Following the conference, there will be opportunities for participants to attend a 10-day labour, student, or cultural exposure tour.

More registrations from around the region and the globe are expected over the next several weeks. Activists in Australia can obtain more information from Action in Solidarity in Indonesia and East Timor (ASIET) via <asiet@asiet.org.au> or from the INCREASE web site at <http://www.solidarityconference.org>.
