Protest targets McHypocrisy

14 March 2001

ADELAIDE — McDonald's decision to sponsor this year's Clean Up Australia Day came under attack here on March 4, when 30 people protested outside the multinational's Rundle Mall store in protest at its hypocrisy.

Representatives of the S11 Coalition, which organised the protest, presented McDonald's representatives with an “Inaugural Orwellian Doublespeak Award”: a gold-painted sculpture made out of discarded McDonalds packaging.

Speakers at the action condemned the “McHypocrisy” of the Clean Up Australia Day sponsorship, pointing out that, because of its refusal to uphold environmental standards, McDonald's packaging represents a large share of the litter that is being cleaned up. Speakers also condemned McDonalds for its role in environmental destruction on a global scale, and its exploitation of young workers.

The S11 Coalition is planning further actions targetting corporate criminals, with the next being a Mothers Day action aimed at Nestle. For further information, email <s11adelaide@egroups.com>.
