Students go underground for M1

14 February 2001

BY GRANT COLEMAN

PERTH — More than 500 issues of Student Underground, a new newsletter produced by secondary students which promotes International Women's Day and the May 1 blockade of the city's stock exchange, have been greeted with enthusiasm and interest at schools across Perth.

“Social injustices are being committed on a global scale”, the newsletter states. “Third World countries do not have a chance to develop. Corporate tyrants are using the peoples of these countries to make profit without regard for human rights or the environment. It is time we stop this!”

“Young people are the driving force in society and are the first to act when something is not functioning. Student Underground is about educating high school students so they can act against injustices and environmental destruction”, the issue declares.

Secondary students are holding a meeting to organise the May 1 school student strike on February 17. Student Underground's producers are encouraging high school students in the state who want to help distribute it or who want to contribute to the next issue to contact Resistance, on 9433 6790 or 9218 9608.
