Mahmoud Darwish: The Land as Language — Considered the greatest living poet of the Arabic language, Mahmoud Darwish was born in 1942 in the village of Barwa in Galilee. In 1948, the Darwish family's home town was razed to the ground by Israeli soldiers. Darwish joined the Israeli Communist Party. Darwish's political activism resulted in his house arrest for writing “seditious” poetry and 26 years in exile. A critic of the Oslo peace deal, Darwish has repeatedly rejected posts with the Palestinian Authority. SBS, Sunday, December 10, 10pm.

Back to Yumba — Yumba was the name of the Aboriginal settlement on the banks of the Maranoa River near Mitchell, south-west Queensland. In 1968, the state department of health bulldozed the camp. This is the story of former residents' campaign to “bring back Yumba”. ABC-TV, Thursday, December 14, 8pm.
