Demanding reproductive freedom

LISMORE -- Twenty-five activists organised by the Southern Cross University Queer Collective held a sit-in at the office of federal National Party MP Ian Causley to oppose the Coalition government's proposed changes to the Sex Discrimination Act. Chanting “Not the church, not the state, women must control their fate”, the protesters presented Causley's staff with two demands: full reproductive rights for all women and IVF access for lesbians and single women. The demonstrators occupied the office for two hours before being evicted by police. Earlier in the day, in a meeting with Queer Collective activists, Causley had said he thought homosexuality is “unnatural” and that children had a right to a “normal” family.
