REGULAR FEATURE
Special appeal from Brandon Astor Jones

30 August 2000

Brandon Astor Jones, the author of the weekly “Looking Out” column in Green Left Weekly, believes that the prison authorities are withholding his personal mail. He usually receives 10 to 50 letters a week, but for the past few months he has been receiving very few letters, sometimes only one or two a week. One of several publications he is also not receiving is Green Left Weekly.

Brandon is also concerned that some of the letters he gives to the staff to mail for him never make it to the post office. In effect, Brandon says, he is being kept incommunicado, which is a violation of his First Amendment rights.

Brandon is asking Green Left Weekly readers to take a few minutes to defend his democratic right to communicate with people outside of the prison. He believes that if thousands of letters are written on his behalf to the powers that be, the administrators will stop interfering with his mail.

Please urgently send a letter to all three people listed below asking that Brandon Astor Jones receive all mail addressed to him, including those items that have been withheld in recent months, and that all of his outgoing mail be posted promptly.

1. Jim Wetherington, Commissioner, Department of Corrections 2 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, South East East Tower, 7th Floor, Atlanta, Georgia 30334-4900, USA. Email <averyd00@dcor.state.ga.us>.

2. Warden Fred Head, Georgia Diagnostic Classification Prison, Post Office Box 3877, Jackson, Georgia 30233, USA.

3. Post Master, US Post Office, 361 East Second Street, Jackson, Georgia 30233, USA.

Thank you for your solidarity.
