Hiroshima Day
BY JENNY LONG
SYDNEY -- Three hundred people gathered here on August 5 to mark the
55th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and
to protest against war and the nuclear industry.
After a march from Hyde Park, the crowd at Town Hall Square was addressed
by speakers including Lorraine Dixon from Sydney People Against the Nuclear
Reactor, anti-nuclear campaigner Helen Caldicott from Our Common Future
Party, Gillian Deakin from the Doctors' Reform Society who called for an
end to the genocidal sanctions on Iraq, and Shirley Lomas, a member of
the stolen generations.
The gathering was entertained by folk duo Margaret Walters and John
Warner, and a capella group Ecopella.
