Stop Nuclear Dumps group formed

BY JIM GREEN

Opponents of a planned national nuclear dump in northern South Australia have formed a new group, Stop Nuclear Dumps.

The group was formed by Everyone for a Nuclear Free Future (formerly the Adelaide Jabiluka Action Group) but will also draw support from elsewhere, including organisers of a March conference which debated waste issues.

Stop Nuclear Dumps says it will pressure the state government to legislate against the dumping of nuclear waste in SA by raising public awareness, lobbying local and state politicians, organising non-violent direct actions and fundraising.

The federal government is expected to commence an environmental impact assessment in July to establish an underground dump for low-level and short-lived intermediate-level nuclear wastes. Most campaigners believe the assessment will be a sham.

The federal government also has plans to build a facility for the indefinite storage of higher-level wastes, including irradiated fuel wastes from the Lucas Heights reactor, at the same site.

If you can help build the campaign against nuclear waste dumping in SA, contact Stop Nuclear Dumps by e-mail <enuffsa@bigfoot.com> or phone (08) 8232 8595.
