Political asylum seekers detained in Greece

Political asylum seekers detained in Greece

At least 36 Iraqi and 33 Afghani political asylum seekers are being held in deplorable conditions in a Greek prison on Kios Island. They have been held there since October 6. The detainees include women and children younger than 12 months.

It has been reported that some of the asylum seekers are suffering from malnutrition, other health problems and a lack of recreational facilities. The Worker Communist Party of Iraq has launched an international campaign for their immediate release into decent accommodation until their cases are heard by the United Nations, to which they have applied for political refugee status.

Protest letters and faxes should be sent to Greece's embassy in Australia at 9 Turrana Street, Yarralumla ACT 2600, fax (02) 2673 2620.
