ueensland teachers plan strike

By Bill Mason

BRISBANE -- State school teachers here are considering a strike or work bans in an effort to force Education Queensland to negotiate on the pay claim the union lodged almost four months ago.

Queensland Teachers Union vice-president Julie-Ann McCullough said on October 25 that teachers around the state would hold meetings over the following two weeks to formulate an industrial campaign.

McCullough said teachers were angry that the government had not yet responded to their claim for an 8% annual pay rise and an extra 5% one-off rise for beginner teachers.

“If, in fact, we don't have a position offered to us soon, or for that matter, if we do have a position offered that's untenable, there could be industrial action very soon”, she said.
