Kurds protest Ocalan death sentence

By Gail Lord

More than 150 members of the Kurdish community travelled to Canberra on June 30 to condemn the death sentence imposed by a Turkish security court on the leader of the Kurdistan Workers Party, Abdullah Ocalan. The protesters also criticised the Australian government over its failure to condemn the sentence.

In Sydney, 50 people protested at the Turkish consulate. The action was called by the Worker Communist Party of Iraq. Police arrested three protesters for assault.

The demonstrators said that police continued to photograph them after they had asked them not to. When the demonstrators objected and attempted to prevent photos being taken, they were arrested.
