Wild Spaces film festival

The fourth Wild Spaces environmental film festival is only a couple of weeks away. Taking place on May 28-30 in all capital cities (except Canberra), as well as Fremantle, Geraldton, NSW north coast, Bowraville and the Blue Mountains, the festival offers a feast of films intended to reflect and inform environmental and social justice concerns in a local, national and international context.

In many cities, each evening of films is introduced by guest speakers from the environment movement. The films include documentaries, fiction and animation, and the work of 19 finalists in the Wild Spaces New Film Maker Awards will be shown during the May 28 program.

Some of the highlights in the three days include: the Australian premiere of Nukes in Space 2: Unacceptable risks, about the Cassini space probe and NASA's plans for future missions involving plutonium; Mama Bilong Olgata (Mother of Us All), about alternatives to industrial logging in PNG; ERA of Destruction, about the Jabiluka mine in Kakadu National Park; and another Australian premiere, Black Sea Voyage of Healing, a circumnavigation of the Black Sea with David Suzuki and David Bellamy looking at environmental, economic and spiritual problems in the post-Communist era.
