It's time like these you need GLW

July 1 was a bad day for most of us. It was a day that most will wish had never happened. Perhaps it was just a bad dream? Unfortunately not.

Pauline Hanson's One Nation party launched its racist “whiter-than-white” right-wing immigration policy, which revolves around turning Australia into the promised land for white supremacists.

On that same day, One Nation supporters, the mining companies and large capitalist land-holders, were no doubt pleased to hear the announcement that a dirty deal had been stitched up between Senator Brian Harradine and John Howard on the discriminatory Wik bill. This will seriously undermine native title and the rights of Aboriginal people, further blocking real steps towards reconciliation and justice.

Then there was the beginning of the common youth allowance and the introduction of the 20 “allowable matters” for industrial awards. Thousands of young people will be cut off benefits. If they are fortunate enough to get a job, they can join the growing ranks of super-exploited workers who are suffering the brunt of the Reith-Kernot industrial “reforms”.

A tiny minority of filthy rich corporate tops -- Howard's and Beazley's mates -- were the only ones with anything to celebrate on July 1.

It is times like these when you need an alternative news source to counter the lies and scapegoating. Green Left Weekly provides a diverse range of information and reports on campaigns for workers' rights, women's rights, the environment, international solidarity and many other important social issues.

Green Left Weekly provides a forum for discussion and debate on how to counter the attacks by the Coalition and how to build a real movement for progressive change.

A subscription to Green Left Weekly is the best way to keep in touch with the inspiring struggles for justice and equality, here and around the world. Once you have subscribed, you will look forward to the day that your Green Left Weekly arrives.
