Concert for miners' struggles

By Paul Oboohov

CANBERRA -- The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union held a fundraising concert here on November 29 for the Hunter Valley No. 1 and Gordonstone miners. The miners are in bitter struggles with the companies Rio Tinto and ARCO.

Held behind the Dickson Tradesmen's Club (“the Tradies'”) in a large marquee, the concert featured well-known folk musicians John Dengate and Margaret Roadknight, as well as Maureen Cummuskey, Seamus Gill, and Fife and Clackmannanshire. The concert was recorded by local community radio station 2XX.

The ACT branch of the construction division of the CFMEU handed a cheque for $1500 to a representative of the Gordonstone miners. More than $100,000 has been raised by the ACT CFMEU for these struggles to date, and $250,000 has been pledged by the national construction division of the CFMEU.
