Police called to community barbecue

QUEANBEYAN -- The Henderson Road Residents Action Group were forced to hold their October 19 community barbecue on the tiny nature strip between the abandoned railway goods yard and the busy road.

NSW State Rail had employed a security guard to stop residents using the disused stretch of land, which they want to have rezoned so that it can be used as community space.

Mayor of Queanbeyan Frank Pangallo, who was amongst those ordered off the yard, described State Rail as “bloody minded” and promised to continue negotiations with the NSW government in the hope of getting a favourable outcome.

The convener of the group, Yvonne Francis, said that the security guard called police to help keep residents out. “There are people trying to bring up kids with just a metre balcony. We just want somewhere for our kids to play in safety.”
