Sydney Campaign Against Racism meets

By Shane Bentley

SYDNEY -- The Campaign Against Racism meeting at the University of Technology, Sydney, on August 5 went ahead with organising the “No to Hanson and Howard's Racism” rally planned for August 30 in Manly, and took a number of organisational decisions.

CAR voted to send representatives to Marrickville Council to urge it to create a “racism-free zone” by establishing an environment for free and open discussion and through starting an anti-racist campaign that educates and involves local residents.

This move was partly in response to the International Socialist Organisation's attempts to lobby the council to ban One Nation meetings.

A motion opposing the actions of Ipswich, Brisbane and Ashfield councils in banning One Nation from using council property was also passed.

A motion to reaffirm CAR's statement of aims and objectives passed by a large majority. Another that called on the ISO to leave CAR because of its consistent opposition to CAR's aims was defeated, after speakers pointed out the undemocratic nature of such a motion.

CAR decided to support the September 21 Domain rally in support of native title, called by Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation. CAR is also sponsoring the September 27-28 Fighting Racism youth and student conference at the University of Technology. For more information, phone 9519 4619 or 9690 1977.
