Campaign Against Racism established in Melbourne

By Maurice Sibelle

MELBOURNE -- Campaign Against Racism was set up here at a meeting on June 12. CAR was established to oppose the racism of Howard and Hanson following the successful Justice Tour organised by Green Left Weekly.

Reihana Mohideen, convener of Asian Australians Against Further Intimidation (AAAFI), and Yaluritja (Clarrie Isaacs), an Aboriginal leader from Perth, toured Melbourne between May 31 and June 2.

They spoke at the Wurundjeri Aboriginal festival, Campaign Against the Nazis rally and Green Left Weekly dinner on May 31. Seventy people attended a public meeting on June 2.

The immediate focus of CAR is to support the call by the National Union of Students to protest outside the meeting of One Nation on July 7, 6.30pm at the Dandenong Town Hall, Lonsdale Street, Dandenong..

The campaign aims to organise and support demonstrations whenever Hanson or her One Nation party organise public activities. It will also organise and support broader demonstrations or activities which build support for an anti-racist agenda.

CAR convener Sue Bolton explained, “We know that there is sentiment out there in opposition to Hanson and Howard's racism. It just needs to be organised.”
