Kleenex boycott

A meeting of local residents and conservationists held in Apollo Bay on June 6-8 voted unanimously to reject an offer to meet with the multinational corporation Kimberly Clark about the current consumer boycott of Kleenex tissues. Instead, it resolved to intensify a national public awareness campaign about the clear-fell logging of Otways native forest to make Kleenex and Wondersoft tissue paper.

Children by Choice lose funding

BRISBANE -- Children by Choice, a counselling, information and referral service for women providing confidential information on all options with pregnancy, was told on May 27 by Queensland Health representatives that their funding would cease as of June 30.

State health minister Mike Horan stated on ABC radio that Children by Choice would be de-funded because he does not support agencies which refer to abortion providers, and that funding would go to “more appropriate services”.

Children by Choice face closure or a greatly reduced service on volunteer labour if funding is not provided. They have asked for letters to be sent to the health minister, the premier and MPs urging continued funding.

Shell boycott called

SYDNEY -- A consumer boycott of Shell products has been called by the Greens NSW following an address to their state conference by Komene Famaa from the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People.

Famaa told delegates that “20 environmental activists are currently facing possible execution by the Nigerian government. These people were arrested in May 1994, along with leading environmental figure Ken Saro-Wiwa who, with eight others, was executed in November 1995.”
