What a year it's been

11 December 1996

This is it, the last issue of Green Left Weekly for 1996 -- and what a year it has been!

For the last 12 months, Green Left has been covering all of the issues and debates that have made the news, both in Australia and overseas. In particular, we've reported extensively on the change of government in Canberra and the reactions to it -- from the savage budget cuts and attacks on workers' rights which culminated in the August 19 rally in Canberra, to the expansion of woodchipping licences and the privatisation of Telstra. Green Left Weekly has carried the debates and discussions in the environment, student, trade union, women's and Aboriginal movements about how to fight back.

As it emerged, Green Left exposed the politics behind the race debate, and the horrific consequences of racism for Aborigines and migrants in this country.

On world events, particularly in the Asia Pacific, Green Left Weekly leads the way as a news source for activists. And every week, Green Left's pages include special columns on women's liberation issues, politics in the US and comments on life behind bars.

Add to all of that the cutting cartoons and five or six pages of Cultural Dissent reviews examining progressive books, movies, theatre and other cultural events, and you might wonder how you ever got by without Green Left.

We'll all miss our weekly fix of information, discussion and debate over the next five weeks, but 1997 will be kicking off with an even better, "new look" Green Left Weekly -- so make sure you subscribe from the start. See page 7 for subscription details or call our subscription hotline, free call 1800 634 206. Green Left Weekly -- it's your paper.
