Amnesty International anti-union?

Amnesty International in the United States -- an organisation that champions the right of workers around the globe to organise -- is embroiled in a dispute over the right of its own employees to join a trade union.

Earlier this year, 65 of AIUSA's 83 staff members asked to join the Communications Workers of America and requested that AI management recognise the union as their representative. On the advice of their lawyers, AIUSA management challenged the eligibility of the workers to join the CWA before the National Labor Relations Board. AIUSA management succeeded in having 30 staff excluded because they were "supervisors or confidential employees". On October 17, the staff voted to withdraw their petition to join the CWA.
