Emergency appeal

28 August 1996

Emergency appeal

Having seen reports and television coverage of the events of the past weeks in Jakarta, we call on the Indonesian government to:

  • release all people detained following the military assault on the headquarters of the Indonesia Democratic Party (PDI) on July 27, including those like Muchtar Pakpahan, later taken into custody

  • release the leaders of the People's Democratic Party (PRD) arrested in Surabaya on July 8 (Dita Sari, Hussein Pontoh and Mohamed Soleh)

  • end all intervention in the internal affairs of the PDI and restore recognition of the elected leadership

  • end all repression against the PDI and PRD and permit freedom of assembly and association.

ASIET (Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor) calls on all people in solidarity with the Indonesian democratic movement to endorse this emergency appeal, which is being circulated internationally. ASIET wants to present this appeal to the Indonesian authorities, with copies to the Australian government, on October 28. Please send a letter with your endorsement to ASIET National Secretariat, PO Box 458, Broadway 2007. Make a copy or retype this appeal and ask friends and workmates to endorse it. If you are active in any organisation, trade union, delegates' committee or other group, ask them to endorse it also.

The PRD and other activists still urgently need financial support to keep their organisation alive while avoiding being hunted down, and ASIET needs finances to produce leaflets and booklets to help keep people informed in Australia. Please also send donations to the above address.
