Indonesian activist on tour

By Jo Brown

Nico Warouw, the international officer of the People's Democratic Party (PRD) and a leader of Students in Solidarity with Democracy in Indonesia (SMID), urged support for the growing democracy struggle in Indonesia and the East Timor freedom movement at a series of campus forums across NSW.

Warouw addressed students at Southern Cross University (Coffs Harbour and Lismore campuses), University of New England (Armidale) and Newcastle University during a five-day tour last week.

As the recent riots and pro-democracy protests unfolded in Jakarta, students and local media were keen to hear from a leader of the party that has been targeted by the Indonesian government for its role in the protests. At Newcastle University, dissident Indonesian academic George Aditjondro also spoke.

This was the first section of a tour of NSW campuses organised by SMID, the National Union of Students (NSW) and the socialist youth organisation Resistance. Warouw will also tour campuses in Sydney, Canberra, Wollongong and Bathurst. For more information, phone Resistance on (02) 9690 1230 or NUS on (02) 9267 4463.
