CPSU branch urges action on job cuts

3 July 1996

By Maree Roberts

CANBERRA -- At the June 26 CPSU ACT branch conference, delegates voted for the branch leadership to organise a mass meeting as soon as possible to put a motion to the members for strike action against the cuts. It has become apparent that the union's national officials are resigned to the Coalition's planned cuts. Current strategies, such as a bans campaign, are not sufficient to pressure the government nor to galvanise the officials into organising an effective industrial campaign.

The conference also affirmed a motion to retain its three elected full-time positions after branch secretary Cath Garvan proposed that these positions be cut to two. Delegates argued that at a time when members are facing such unprecedented attacks, more democracy in the union is needed, not less.
