Not on the list

22 May 1996

Last week, Business Review Weekly published its annual list of the 200 richest Australians. For those who missed it, Kerry Packer is still at the top, though he's $2 billion or so down on his wealth of several years ago.

Things are tough in this part of the media world too. We immediately checked the BRW list against Green Left Weekly's sponsors and share holders. And wouldn't you know it: not a one of the richest 200 is a GLW backer!

Those familiar with Green Left won't be too surprised by our lack of support from the very wealthy. But there's a conclusion that follows for those of us who do support the existence of a viable alternative media: it's up to all of us to pitch in.

If Green Left Weekly had a billionaire (or even a millionaire) paying the bills, the rest of us could afford not to kick in and be confident there would still be a Green Left every week.

But in the real world, it's up to each of us to do our part. Please help the fund appeal (see page 4) with as much as you can. Green Left Weekly -- it's your paper.
