Action updates

East Timor campaign

WOLLONGONG -- A lively demonstration in the Crown Street mall on March 30 brought Saturday morning shoppers' attention to BHP's theft of East Timor's oil and the Australian government's support for Indonesia's occupation of East Timor.

The action was part of an ongoing campaign by the socialist youth organisation Resistance, leading up to the broadly sponsored East Timor national day of action on August 25. The next activity of the campaign in Wollongong will be a screening of John Pilger's film Death of a Nation at 7.30pm on May 11 at the Illawarra Migrant Resource Centre. Wollongong University creative arts students will perform a cultural action on the night. Phone 262 010 for details.

Warning on censorship

HOBART -- The Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group has warned that the Hobart City Council's plans for a "review" of electoral material at Salamanca market closely resembles the action it took in 1989 to prevent the TGLRG from campaigning at the market.

This review could, says the TGLRG, lead to the removal of all political material and stalls from the market. The TGLRG, the Tasmanian Greens and Green Left Weekly all have regular stalls.

Rally for peace

BRISBANE -- Under the theme, Towards a World Free of Nuclear Weapons, the Palm Sunday Rally for Peace was held here on March 31. Hundreds of people rallied in the Roma Street Forum, and later marched to Musgrave Park for a peace concert and festival.

Irish rebellion celebrated

BRISBANE -- Australian Aid for Ireland celebrated the republican rebellion of Easter 1916 with a march and ceremony at the Toowong cemetery on April 7. The celebration is held annually in Brisbane at the grave side of Kevin and Eva O'Doherty, a couple who were outspoken campaigners for Irish freedom from Britain in the 19th century in Queensland, after being exiled from Ireland.

Jim Cusack, secretary of AAI in Queensland, urged the audience to join and become active. For more information, contact AAI (Qld), PO Box 246, Chermside Q4032.
