Walk against Want

Community Aid Abroad's 30th annual Walk against Want, raising funds to fight hunger in the Third World, will take place on March 24 with more than 100 events across Australia. To register for the walk, ring 1800 034 034.

Cuban Solidarity Picket

SYDNEY -- Twenty-five people attended a picket in solidarity with Cuba outside the US consulate here on March 6. The picket was called by the Committees in Solidarity with Latin America and the Caribbean and Resistance to oppose the United States' tightening of its economic blockade of the island. Sandra Wallace from Resistance said, "It is important that the Australian government condemn the increased attacks by the United States on Cuba". Wallace called on the Australian government to follow the example of the European Union and Canada, which are taking the issue of the illegality of the embargo to the World Trade Organisation.

Inquiry on Ranger

DARWIN -- ENuFF (Everyone for a Nuclear Free Future) is planning a People's Inquiry Into Ranger Uranium Mine on March 30. The aim is to highlight the latest information on the uranium industry and its effects upon health, environment, politics, economics and the traditional landowners. Women against racism

NEWCASTLE -- Around 50 people took part in the launch of a campaign by women against racism on March 8 at Newcastle University. The action was timed to coincide with International Women's Day and is part of a national campaign by women students. The campaign is being supported by Newcastle University Students Association, the Women on Campus group, the Resistance club and a range of other students and staff.
