Physical theatre at its best

14 February 1996
700 positions
A solo performance by Celia White
Directed by Gail Kelly
State Theatre 2, Sydney
Until February 17

700 positions is a contemporary exploration of lesbian sexual practices, identities, behaviours, desires and fantasies, and is being staged as part of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival. It's physical theatre -- and at its best. In the program, the audience is told the piece works when you engage with it, when your body responds to it. I was responding from the first scene. The work includes performance, video, slides and music, but the term "multimedia" is too clinical to describe the richness and depth of this multi-layered exploration of visual delights. Gail Kelly and Celia White, who have been working for well over a year on the project, have pulled off a sophisticated, funny, sensual and very very sexy work. The video, by Maria Barbagallo, blends beautifully, and the lighting design, by Efterpi Soropos, creates depth and texture. Although its season is disappointingly short, 700 positions is definitely a must see.
