Woman wins pregnancy dismissal case31 January 1996
By Bill Mason BRISBANE -- A Townsville woman who was sacked as a casual hotel receptionist because she was pregnant won a landmark award in the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Tribunal on January 22. Kerri Skellern was awarded nearly $14,000 and a public apology from her former employer.This is the first time the tribunal has overturned the dismissal of a casual worker because of pregnancy. The decision is an important victory for casual workers because Skellern had previously been unable to obtain support in the Industrial Relations Commission as a casual employee. "I'm thrilled. I was confident all the way. It shows women can stand up for themselves", she said after the ruling. Skellern's advocate, Clerks Union north Queensland branch secretary James O'Donnell, said the decision was a warning to all employers.
