By Sarah Stephen CANBERRA -- Student Underground, an anti-nuclear magazine produced by and for students, was launched outside Narrabundah College on October 13. ACT education minister Bill Stefaniak said on local television news that he was concerned that a radical magazine was being "rammed down students' throats" by Resistance, a socialist youth organisation.
Student Underground includes articles on the recent French nuclear tests, the environment, East Timor, women's rights and racism. Canberra Resistance organiser Marina Carman told
Green Left Weekly that
Student Underground provided one of the few forums for students to express their views. "Resistance members in various schools have been involved with others in putting
Student Underground together. However, some don't like to see young people taking charge of their lives and expressing their views." Canberra Students Against Nuclear Testing and Resistance are planning another student walkout for October 25 with a rally at 1pm.
