May Day in Wollongong

By Liam Mitchell

WOLLONGONG -- Approximately 200 people braved wet weather to celebrate May Day on May 6. Labour unions, political parties, a contingent of picketers from the recently disbanded Coledale hospital picket line and students from Wollongong University attended the march and rally.

National spokesperson for the Wilderness Society Kevin Parker, who addressed the rally, pointed to the links between the social and environmental destruction caused by capitalism.

Wollongong university Student Representative Council representative Lylea McMahon spoke about the abolition of free education and restrictions working-class people face in entering higher education.

South Coast Labour Council assistant secretary Mark Armstrong also addressed the gathering about the reasons for marching on May Day.
