Large May Day march in WA

By Rjurik Davidson

PERTH -- The May Day march and rally, held in Fremantle on May 7, was the biggest in recent years. Almost 5000 people participated.

The theme of the day was “Back to Basics” unionism, highlighting the need for unions to take the lead in opposing job losses and cutbacks from both state and federal governments.

Several unions are conducting campaigns against cuts and sell-offs in education, health care, public transport and utilities. The State School Teachers Union (SSTU) mass meeting, held just before the march, was attended by nearly 2000 teachers and members of the community.

The May Day march included contingents from most trade unions, and a number of political parties and community groups. Animal Liberation activists and others marched with the Meat Industry Employees Union, opposing job cuts caused by live sheep and cattle exports.

After the march people rallied to hear speakers including WA Trades and Labour Council acting secretary Tony Cooke and SSTU president Peter Quinn.

Aboriginal activist Clarrie Isaacs attempted to speak about the sacred site at the old Swan Brewery, but was denied permission by the organising committee.

The rally closed with a performance from the Working Voices union choir and a dance troupe.
